Tools, techniques, and strategies for delivering engaging online sessions
Place a lamp at eye level in front of you (not behind). Natural light from a window is best. Avoid overhead lighting — it creates shadows under your eyes.
Don't talk for more than 10 minutes without interaction. Virtual attention drops sharply after 8-10 minutes. The "Zoom wall" is real — plan engagement every 8 minutes minimum.

| Challenge | Solution |
|---|---|
| Participants muted/hidden | Use "round robin" — call on each person by name. Start with easy questions. |
| Zoom fatigue | Offer "cameras optional" breaks. Keep sessions shorter (60-90 min max). |
| Technical issues | Record all sessions. Share a "Tech Troubleshooting" PDF before the session. |
| Distractions at home | Normalize it. "We all have lives — mute when needed, no apologies required." |
| No energy in the room | Use music for breaks. Start with high-energy icebreaker. Ask people to stand and stretch. |
| Time zone differences | Rotate session times if recurring. Record and share for those who can't attend live. |
Record every session (with permission). Share recordings within 24 hours. Participants appreciate being able to revisit content, and it builds trust with those who missed the live session.
